Cold and Flu Treatments
The common cold and flu have similar symptoms, but they are very different illnesses and are therefore treated in different ways….
The common cold is a viral infection, so taking antibiotics as a treatment will not be effective in relieving your symptoms. There is no cure for a cold, but over-the-counter medications can be taken to temporarily relive symptoms. If you have a cold, drinking plenty of fluids and getting lots of rest should help you feel better!
The flu is also a viral infection, but it’s caused by a different virus than a common cold. Antiviral drugs can be taken to lessen symptoms and shorten the time you are sick by about 1 or 2 days. This medication can also prevent flu complications from developing, such as pneumonia or respiratory infections. Bed rest is also advised, and those who have the flu should stay away from other people to avoid spreading the illness.
